The Cornwall Receiver of Taxes is responsible for the collection of all levied Town taxes and all re-levied school and village taxes in compliance with local and state tax collection regulations.
Property tax bills are mailed out by January 1st. Payments made in January are without penalty. Payments made in February are charged a 1% penalty and payments made in March are charged a 2% penalty plus a $2.00 reminder notice fee. Payments with a postage meter postmark or postage purchased from a third-party vendor (not the US Postal Service) are not deemed timely if received after the due date. If the last day of the month falls on a weekend, the deadline for payment is automatically extended to the following business day.
2026 USPS POSTMARK CHANGE: If you need a same-day postmark, you must go to the USPS Counter and request a manual postmark. Mail dropped off at the post office can now have a delayed postmark up to 2 days later.
After March 31st, the Cornwall Receiver of Taxes cannot accept payments for tax bills. All unpaid tax bills are sent to the Orange County Commissioner of Finance office for collection, they can be contacted at 845-291-2480.
The Receiver of Taxes is required by law to send tax bills to banks for those homeowners who have escrow accounts. Once the tax bill is paid, the homeowner will receive a receipt from the Cornwall Receiver of Taxes Office.
Please notify the Assessor’s Office at 845-534-7290 if you have paid off your mortgage and no longer have an escrow account. Please contact the Receiver of Taxes office if you are a new homeowner and have not received your tax bill. If you receive a tax bill for a property that you have sold, you are not responsible for payment. If possible, please forward the tax bill to the new owner or notify the Receiver of Taxes office that you no longer own the property.
Pursuant to Real Property Tax Law 922, failure to receive a property tax bill does not relieve the taxpayer of their obligation to pay taxes in full and in a timely manner. If the property taxes are not paid during the interest free period, the taxpayer is obligated to pay interest and penalties for late payments as per New York State Real Property Tax Law 924.
Third Party Notification - You may designate another consenting adult to receive duplicate copies of your tax bill filed at the Cornwall Receiver of Taxes' Office.
